Intrepid Concert Review

5th October 1997

The B-52's played on the Intrepid on 27th September 1997, their first show for an absolute age. It was a private affair, with tickets available through a promotion arranged by Nabisco. The tickets were obtained by buying winning packets of Nabisco Aircrisps. Nadine J Brown and Aaron Daniels attended, and Nadine has kindly provided the following review:

The B's really Danced this Mess around!!!! It was the best show I have ever seen (My 8th show. If you include Just Fred and The Mancini Tribute, then it would B my 10th).

At 6:00 PM, a catered dinner was served with an open bar. Very impressive.
At 8:00 PM, Duncan Sheik went on and played nearly one hour. There was a very long break, and then two Nabisco corporates took the stage and screamed the delights of Aircrisps.

An eternity later, the WPLJ; very funny DJ, not! took the stage for the moment we had all been waiting for. Out came Cindy followed by Fred, Kate, Pat Irwin, Sara Lee, Charlie D and Keith!!!

Outfits

Cindy
Still heavy-set from having her baby, her outfit was a baggy neon green with bright pink flowers. Pants with matching blouse and a hat all made out of the same satin like material. She had blonde bangs hanging out of her hat; any other hair was tucked inside the hat. She wore her tradtional black eyeliner and mascara. It was soooo good to see her again. She wore ankle boots.

Kate
A long sleeved mini dress made out of orange neon velvet with tinsel like glitter fringes on her sleeves and the hem of the dress. The dress had a scoop neckline. Her hair was her Marigold color, as when I saw her last at The Learning Annex with a blonde streak down on one side. She wore black fishnet stockings and black heels. Her jewelry was a big ring with a orange rim in the shape of a clock. Earrings were bobble-style. She looked exceptional!!!! P.S. No Wigs were worn

Keith
Basic black from head to toe. No hat. His hair was very short and lightened. He also had a goatee.

Fred
His hair was the same as at The Mancini Concert; light, short and a curly Q on top. He wore dime store style blue and green shirt and pants. Around his neck was a choker with a black string and a green charm. He wore basic sneakers. He had not changed at all since June when I last interviewed him.

Sara Lee
She is so tiny! She wears an elf size. She wore a cute pink and silver mini skirt with matching jacket. Her hair was just like in the Love Shack video.

Pat Irwin
He looked the same as before, except his hair was very black and very thick and curly.

Charlie D.
Zach Alfred's replacement on drums

Song List

OK. Now that we have set the scene, here is the song list in order:

  1. Planet Claire
  2. Strobe Light
  3. Good Stuff
  4. Revolution Earth
  5. Dance This Mess Around
  6. Quiche Lorraine
  7. Deadbeat Club
  8. Give Me Back My Man
  9. Channel Z
  10. Private Idaho
  11. Roam
  12. Is That You Mo-Dean?
  13. Cosmic Thing
  14. Love Shack

16 songs. Well, they did all 16 dances!!!!! Cindy did her traditional "pony" dancing, Fred did his Monster video style dancing and Kate whirled and spun like a spinning top. Keith stayed in the background as we all know he does, playing a bitchin' guitar

I never saw them work soooo hard; they danced like it was 1977!!!!!

B Talk

Cindy: Why is the Empire State Building purple? It was lighted purple.

Fred: We are going to do a depressing song
Nadine: (Loud) Quiche. They are going to do Quiche!!! (Aircrips winners were looking at me strangely)

I have never heard them do Quiche live!!! They acted out a dog on a leash, Fred and Kate bent down to pet an invisible dog. Very cool.

Fred's Family

Fred's brother Chuck and his wife Diane from Maryland were standing next to me. Chuck was nice enough to take Aaron and I downstairs to the backstage party. Luckily, Aaron's name was on the guestlist and we were in!!!

On the ship at one end stood Fred's family waiting for him. He had now changed into a different reception outfit; green pants and a pastel paisley shirt, very nice!!! Mom Schneider hugged and kissed her son and Fred greeted his relatives.

We all entered a room inside, to run straight into Cindy first. She was a very shy tuna, and said she could not autograph, she had to leave. Aaron and I managed to get a photo or two with her and then she left swiftly with her family. I had never met Cindy before. I thought she was a Hellraiser from a lot of the UFO fan club literature, but she is very shy.

Next, I bumped into Sara Lee who very graciously autographed an 8x10 color glossy I had from the last of the UFO mailings. We spoke for a little while. I think I detected a British accent. She was very sweet.

Next, Keith was holding conversation (I waited my turn) and he gave me histradtional bear hug. You have not lived until you get a warm whammy greeting from Keith. He is always super friendly!!! We took photos and he too signed the glossy. He is always a gem; I have always like Keith!!!

The entire world was standing around Katie. Aaron received his kiss. Yes, there are still lipstick marks on his cheek. He will never wash it off. Kate did not change her dress. This is the first backstage reception I have been to where she did not have a "receiving guest" outfit on. I did see on a hanger rack a matching jacket for her orange neon dress. It was labeled "Kate". Also, Kate's make-up mirror, her set of make-brushes, her lipstick (Revlon) and hair spray (Frizz-Ease) was all scattered all over a table where she had gotten ready for the show.

I said to Kate, "None of the Whammy listserve or B-Hive fan club members won". Kate stared at me with shock. Aaron, Liesl and Mats were all standing there with me and we all shook our heads, "No, its true". Kate, I suppose, really did not get into the workings of how Nabisco handled this contest, as Fred understood back in August when he wrote to me explaining it is a Private Party.

I met Jeff, Kate's "significant other". He is tall, dark and handsome. I asked him how the martial arts were going. He answered, "Just fine". They made a lovely couple. Kate also autographed the glossy and posed for photos. She also signed the photo of the two of us from back in 1992. Kate commented "Wow, that was a while ago"!!! Also to mention, both Keith and Fred's "significant others" were there.

In the room were refreshments, and everyone seemed pretty tired. Before we left I said goodbye to Fred and he gave me a warm whammy hug. I said, "Fred, you smell great, what kind of cologne are you wearing?" Fred said, "I am not". He just naturally is aesthetically pleasing. He told me I smell nice; I told him the scent is Cherry Vanilla. Fred signed the glossy and a photo of he and I that I had enlarged from June 22nd. He drew a heart with an arrow through it.

As far as POOB 3, Cindy said 'maybe' and the others declined this time around.
