There's been some early postings on our annual A Party Out of Bounds benefit fun-raiser, so I thought I'd post some very early general information about Party3, which is tenatively being set for Saturday, October 11, 1997, at Boneshakers in Athens, GA.
Background
A Party Out Of Bounds began in 1995 and was organized by B-Hive editor Mats Sexton, Florida/Atlanta D.J. Guy Mazzaglia and myself as a way of marking the 10 years that had passed since Ricky Wilson died of AIDS-related causes. Not wanting to throw a "party" per se, we decided the best thing to do was host a kind of B-52's night at an Athens nightclub and donate the procedes to the AIDS Coalition of Northeast Georgia (then known as AIDS Athens). Because we were concerned that just having a B-52's-only party wouldn't attract as many people, we decided to make it more of a retro-80s party / new wave party with heavy doses of B-52's sets.We continued this theme for Party2 last October, advertised the Party all over Athens/Atlanta, gave away a lot of B-52's freebies from our own personal collections and doubled the take for the ACNG from the first year. People who had heard about A Party Out Of Bounds from the first year came by including old friends and acquaintences of the band. We were also quite surprised and honored by the appearance of Kate and Keith at Party2 where they signed autographs, posed for pictures and danced through the night with the rest of the Party-goers.
Celebrity Sightings
This year we're hoping for a repeat appearance by members of the B-52's, but unfortunately it's virtually impossible to say for sure that any of them will be able to turn up. I know this alone makes it quite maddening for fans who are considering making an incredibly long trip to attend Party3. As Party-planners, we definitely want the band to show up -- we know Kate and Keith had a great time last year and appreciated all the fans who showed up for the cause. From a fan's point of view, it's probably the best way to get to meet the B-52's. Unfortunately, because of circumstances, and because we ourselves won't know until nearly the last minutes, we are just unable to say for sure if any of the B's are going to be able to attend Party3. Something to keep in mind.
Where to Stay
First of all, it's really early to be worried about hotel availability. The big problem we encountered last year was that Party2 was held on the same weekend as a Univeristy of Georgia home football game which meant that every hotel room in Athens was booked. This year there will be no home game on the weekend of Party3, so once the University football schedule is published and distributed I'm certain we'll see a lot of rooms will open up for that weekend.Additionally, we are working with Boneshakers and other hotels around Athens to offer fans who are coming in from out of town/state/country rooms at possibly discounted rates. This is still in the very early stages so as soon as we get this set up and have more information in place we will pass it along to you.
Other Stuff
A lot of people have asked where they can buy tickets for Party3 and the answer is you can't. Since it isn't a concert or a formal charity event, all you do is pay the $5 door charge and that's it.This year we're also toying with the idea of having an auction of B-52's records and memorabilia from our own collections with the procedes to benefit the ACNG. This will probably take place a few weeks before Party3 and will be a silent auction. More details on this as it gets worked out.
As you can tell, a lot of Party3 details are still in the planning stage. Once again as more details from Party Out Of Bounds3 become finalized we will be passing them you. It's a small little event, but the details of all of this take a little time to work out and we're just barely out of the gate on this one.
If you have questions about A Party Out of Bounds you can forward them to either myself or Mats Sexton and we'll try to get an answer for you.
